    James Carmichael-Smyth, who was born in London, as the first son of James Carmichael-Smyth, a famous and successful physician in Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and educated at Charterhouse School in London and the Royal Military Academy, served as an engineer officer in. Smyth of The Bahamas, must not be forgotten. Smyth in his e˚ort to better slave conditions and those of the free coloured populations, must be seen as an early local hero. The Carmichael Primary School was called after the area in which it is situated. It was named during the Governorship of Sir James Carmichael Smyth.
