It has to be the most complete history of the northeast mountains. It starts back when Darby Fields and many others started to explore the area, and runs through the nineteen 5/5(6).

Both a beast and a masterpiece, Forest and Crag is a hefty testament to the Watermans’ love of the mountains of the northeast. Probably only of interest to those readers who share the love of these specific mountains to some extent, it is a worthwhile monster of a book.5/5.

Both books have much to say about the Adirondacks. “Forest and Crag,” however, limits its focus to the High Peaks region. This left me wondering about the early history of hiking near Lake George, which was an early tourist draw.

(Thomas Jefferson visited the lake in ). Forest and Crag also includes an extensive section of reference notes. This is a hefty tome, coming in at pages and almost four pounds. But as I wrote in a review when the book first came out in“Written with grace, style, and good humor, seasoned with a refreshing sense of wonder, Forest and Crag reads more like a gripping novel.
